Why I Started to Work Out Again After 16 Months and How It Relates to Business

I've never been that into working out. In fact, I hadn't worked out regularly for about 16 months. Before I had my son I worked out pretty consistently, and through the first trimester of my pregnancy I even had a trainer! Then we moved. I was consumed by the move, and then by my pregnancy and then by motherhood. I convinced myself that it wasn't really a big deal, until recently when I got a huge wake up call. A few weeks ago my son, Leo, wasn't feeling great and he wanted to be carried...all day...for three days! Now, although I hadn't been to the gym I was feeling the burn. My back and arms felt like they were going to fall off and it made me think a few things...

Am I really that out of shape?

How will I be able to carry him when he gets older?!

I had been telling myself that I didn't have time to workout and whenever I would question that story a voice in my head would say...

“You're a mum and you are so busy and you are doing the best that you can!”

But that wasn't 100% true. I am a mum and I am certainly busy but this wasn't my best, not even close. As I continued to think, I realized that a lot of the excuses I was giving about why I wasn't exercising were the exact same excuses that I've heard (and sometimes used) in relation to business.

Use the plan below to succeed in business and at the gym!

Set Clear Goals

When I would walk into my building's gym and do a few minutes on the elliptical or do half an hour of a yoga on YouTube (Yoga with Adrienne anyone?) I was just going through the motions. I made those half-hearted attempts at working out because I was “supposed to”.

I didn't have a strong enough reason to exercise so I was always distracted by the first opportunity to get a few extra minutes of sleep or watch a little TV.

Similarly in business, if you aren't sure why you are going into business you can't possibly know whether you are making progress, because you don't know what progress looks like for you.

It's vital to know what you want and why!

Everyone is different. While it would be nice to look like a Victoria Secret model, that's not a goal that motivates me. My goal is to be stronger so that I don't go to bed each night with a sore back (so sexy, I know). Once I became more clear about my goals, I approached working out differently.

Question: Are you clear about your goals for your business? Once you are you'll approach it differently, too.

What's the Game Plan?

To get started, I sat down with a friend and explained my goals. From that conversation he was able to write a program for me that lays out the steps I need to take in order to meet my goal. Now whenever I go to the gym I know exactly what I need to do!

In exercise as well as with business, it is imperative that you have a strong game plan and there's nothing wrong with asking for a little help. The It Girl Academy programs all feature 1:1 coaching for just this reason.

First hand experience has taught me that having a well thought out strategy is one of the keys to success and it goes hand and hand with our next key: holding yourself accountable.

Question: Do you have a plan to make your goals happen?

Don't Let Family Be a Distraction

Having my son was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. Raising him has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences and it came with an unexpected perk: an unlimited supply of get out of jail free cards!

People are so understanding about the highs and lows of child rearing that saying “I can't because (insert baby related issue)” can become the standard response when faced with something you don't want to do. Honestly, I was becoming way too reliant on that fact.

Maybe you don't have a little one. Maybe your get out jail free card is your partner, or older children. Family is absolutely important but so are you. Reach out to your support system and ask for help! As it turns out, my husband was more than willing to be available to look after Leo when I went to the gym - I just needed to ask!

Question: What support do you need so you can schedule time to work on your business?

Get Real!

“I'm doing my best!” is most people's automatic response when faced with their shortcomings, but ask yourself: am I really? For me, the honest answer was no. Holding yourself up to the light and being truthful about how you can improve is scary and a lot of times we avoid it because we are afraid that our shortcomings will define us.

What I realized though, is that acknowledging my shortcomings in this arena was actually an opportunity to improve. We all have things to work on; there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Question: Are you really doing your best?

Be Consistent

Once all of the puzzle pieces are in place and you're ready to go, consistency is key.

Most people can make a change for a week but can you do it for a month? A year? A decade?

In order to lose a few kilos and tone up in the gym I have to consistently follow the plan I've developed. In business and in the gym, follow through or lack thereof can make or break you.

Question: Are you being consistent?
