What To Do When Nothing Seems To Be Working
Do you ever feel like you're constantly being told what you “should” do with your business, but despite how much you try, it just doesn't feel right? It's an uncomfortable situation to be in when you're starting your own business. There's so much pressure in the initial stages between leaving your job and launching something new. It's often tense and scary, and the extra stress is unwelcome. I’m telling you this because at one point, I knew exactly how you felt. I was just starting out on social media and beginning to take my online persona more seriously, but it was difficult because I didn’t exactly know how to start.
I had a few recommendations that YouTube would be a great idea since it's linked with Google and videos are easy to find (not to mention, what if my video had gone viral!?). I was hesitant at first, then I finally recorded my first YouTube video and quickly realized that it just wasn't for me.
After trying YouTube, I eventually turned to podcasting, which seemed like quite a logical step in the chain of events. I didn’t like being on camera (something about it made me nervous and added pressure that I didn't need or want at the time), but podcasting is often recorded alone, and at my request. It was a better fit, and my It Girl Radio idea came naturally.
The problem is, there are no cookie-cutter solutions for launching your business or getting a kick-start to your online career. Sometimes, you just have to try your hand at something, realize it's not a good fit for you, or your brand, and move on.
But how can you determine what’s right for you and your growing online business? Rather than wallowing in self-doubt, here are a few tips that have helped me to get back on track and keeping trying.
Change the game plan
Sometimes your best option is to take yourself away from the situation and try to regroup and reflect on what you've tried so far, and why it hasn't worked. The only way to truly grow from something is to acknowledge the things that went wrong, then try and correct the problem going forward. It sounds simple enough, but sometimes we get stuck in this unhealthy cycle.
Take a step back and think of things with a fresh mind. You need to give yourself enough time to move away from the things that haven’t gone as planed so you can make room for those that will. Both cannot co-exist in one single arena. Reduce how invested you are in the ideas that didn’t make it up to par, and switch-up your new strategy moving forward.
It's easy to focus on all the negative aspects of life, but doing so makes it more difficult to realize all the good going on around us. If you find it hard to focus on the positive things going on with your business, it’s a good idea to start a daily gratitude journal. Each morning, make it part of your ritual and write down all the good things you've been grateful for (in both your business and personal life) then you can reflect on them throughout the day when you’re feeling down.
Content Marketing Strategist, Gregory Ciotti said that when we write something down, it gives it more power, and I completely agree. I promise you'll notice a huge different in your overall mood and outlook when you start a gratitude journal, because it focuses on all the good things that going on in your life.
Trust your instincts
Too often, we rely on the opinions and suggestions of others – they tell us what's right and how to feel. It can be quite a toxic cycle to be a part of (especially when it comes to business). One of the best tips I could ever share with you is to completely trust your instincts. Intuition is a valuable tool to have in your possession and, trust me, it’s almost always right.
Only you will know which ventures are right for you and your business, which chances to take, and those to leave exactly where they are. I don’t want you to never take any chances or consider suggestions, but you'll know deep down which ones are the right choice for you and your growing business.
It’s all in your head
I am a big believer that if you change your outlook, you can change your life, and everything from that point on will start to look and feel different. Our brains have a protective instinct to see the worst in situation, rather than the best, but fighting against that can help you discover better outcomes.
Start to think about things from a pragmatic point of view, rather than think that the problems you have will solve themselves. If your Instagram isn’t getting enough interaction, change the times you post; if your Facebook reach isn’t as high as it once was, switch-up your content schedule and try something new. I want you to know that there is a solution to each and every problem you are encountering now, and the only way to improve it is by acknowledging that changes need to be made.
Putting a new perspective on a situation is the perfect piece of advice I can give to anyone struggling with their online business – whether that be coaching or anything else. The same rule always applies in a situation like this; if something is not exactly working out as you had planned, it’s probably time to try a new, completely different approach to blow all your other ideas out of the water.
Whenever I'm unsure about a new approach to my business, I consider attending a mastermind session. It's a great way to get my ideas out there and listened to by a number of different people. Not only can they offer their unique advice on the situation, but collaborative brainstorming is an amazing way to get unstuck.
Find a mentor or a coach
There are so many free resources available on the internet that offer solutions to almost any type of problem you might encounter with your business. In particular, relevant keywords on videos, posts, articles and podcasts are some of the best ways to reach out to people who might have similar queries or answers to your problems.
Support in general is a great way to bypass any problem and feel as if you’re not alone. Rather than dwelling on the problem at hand and not doing anything about it, just know that there are so many ways to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
The more you adapt these techniques into your life, the easier it will be to look at the good things in life and resolve the ones that didn’t go as planned. Change your mindset and everything will work out for you in the end.
