How to Handle Being Overwhelmed with Work
Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been an entrepreneur for years one thing is true: we all get a little overwhelmed sometimes. I actually don't like using the word “overwhelmed” because even just seeing the word makes me feel - overwhelmed! Plus we don't want to attract more of what we don't want (feelings of overwhelm) BUT in order for me to identify with you I'm using the word overwhelmed in this post... Hope that makes sense :)
Okay let's get back to it!
Sometimes it feels like you’ve got a dozen balls in the air at the same time and the idea of adding anything else can be paralyzing because, well… you don’t want to drop it all. I have been there and I have discovered some key business tips to combat the feeling of being overwhelmed.
When I was first getting started, I had what a lot of people would call a “good job”. When the thought of having my own business first started to come up, I didn’t jump into action. In fact, I froze. As I sat in that paralyzed place I struggled to find a phrase that encompassed how I was feeling and then it came to me, “I feel overwhelmed”.
I thought that there was supposed to be some final straw or some hardship propelling me but at the end of the day, I just wasn’t happy. The idea of leaving this “not quite right” career to embark on a brand new journey focused on health and wellness (business coaching would come later) was terrifying. Besides, it would be selfish to take this risk and give up a sure thing, right?
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Stop Feeling Bad About Being Selfish
Maybe you are concerned about spending time away from your children, or your partner, or even your friends. Maybe you are concerned that you won’t be able to serve those people that need you if you add anything else to your plate, and that’s a valid concern. Starting your own business does require a huge time commitment.
But the truth is, if you are not whole, you are already doing your loved ones a disservice by not serving your highest self.
Being “selfish” is important.
When you are walking in your purpose you are able to be a more present parent, partner and friend because you are coming into your relationships as a fulfilled individual. So if your purpose involves owning your own business, go for it!
Once I took the leap and began building a business I was amazed by how I changed as a person. Business ownership changed my outlook and how I interacted with others, for the better.
As my business took off I encountered a new version of being overwhelmed.
As a relatively new small business owner, I would wake up each day and work feverishly and at the end of each day I didn’t feel like I had made a dent. I was beginning to feel that old familiar paralyzing fear that comes with being overwhelmed when I decided to make a few assessments.
Delegate To Combat Feeling So Overwhelmed
What are you currently handling that only you can do? Find out and delegate the rest. Your time is valuable and you should spend your time on the tasks that require your attention. If someone else can do it, let them!
I know that letting other people in and relinquishing control can be intense but it’s essential to growth. You can have it all but you can’t do it all. Which brings me to my next point: hire someone to help around the house.
Don’t Let Housework Overwhelm You
I’ve been a nanny. I’ve been a dishwasher. I am no stranger to changing diapers and cleaning up spills. But, the truth is there are only so many hours in the day and I realized that spending my time on housework meant taking time away from the activities that could help me grow my business and be more present. As a business owner I have to be mindful of how I am spending my time.
So I had to make a change. I was overwhelmed with work, both in my business and at home something had to give. I decided hiring people to assist me with my day-to-day housekeeping was the best option.
Overpowering Anxiety By Knowing Your Worth
I knew that I needed to hire some help but...could I afford it? I was feeling a bit of anxiety about this and so I reframed my thinking. I calculated my hourly rate by breaking down the cost of my programs and the time they required and I realized that making an investment in a housekeeper (and now a nanny) was actually a sound fiscal decision that would afford me the opportunity to attract clients that would definitely cover that investment!
There’s no doubt, whether you are figuring out how to start a business or how to build a thriving business, each stage of discovery comes with its share of challenges. Those can be overwhelming, but being overwhelmed doesn’t have to be paralyzing.
If you can take a moment to step back and analyze where you are and what you need you can develop small actionable goals to propel you into action.
And speaking of taking action...
