Are Traditional 9-5 Jobs Dying?
The world of the 9-5 is slowly disappearing, and in its place an entrepreneurial society is taking shape. The rise in global technology has created a world of independent workers excited about using their innate gifts and talents to start their own businesses. Maybe you’ve noticed this trend when talking to your friends and acquaintances. While dinner party conversations used to focus on promotions, salaries and job searches, they’ve shifted into discussions about how to manage time and complete tasks with an open, free schedule.
The world inhabited by our parents is slowly disappearing as more and more people open their own online businesses or work remotely in some capacity.
According to Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, from 1948-2000, jobs grew 1.7 times faster than the population. Since 2000, the population has grown 2.4 times faster than jobs — a remarkable pivot that has left us with more employable adults than available employment.
So how did this shift happen and how can you stay ahead of the game and take advantage of this rising trend? In this article I’m going to uncover the events that led up to this new transition and help you figure out how you can thrive in it.
But, first, let’s talk a little bit about the old paradigm and why it just won’t cut it anymore.
The Future is The Individual
Changes can be uncomfortable, and though this shift is certainly positive, some might see it as a sign of a doomed workforce. But the truth is, these changes happened because our needs and ideals have evolved.
When we lived in an industrial era, our basic needs like safety, shelter and community were provided by salaried positions. We thrived in that world because it took care of our needs, but then we shifted from industry to technology.
Think about the type of jobs we had 50 years ago compared with the jobs of today. What used to need a human touch can now be done more efficiently with technology. That leaves us with the jobs of creating, innovating, teaching, selling - all of the tasks that need human to human interaction.
This shift doesn’t mean we have less jobs - it means we have more fulfilling jobs.
You no longer have to work in a position simply because it pays the bills. There has never been a better opportunity to share your talents and skills with your community and the world at large.
The truth is, we’re searching for something more — the desire for not just work, but meaningful work - to develop our own expertise rather than the generalized knowledge of a typical salaried worker, freedom with both our choices and our time.
Technology is Key
At the root of all of these changes is technology. Not only the technology that replaced the human element in industry, but the technology that connects us globally.
In most places in the world, just a simple internet connection can connect you with the entire global community. The opportunity to independently study whatever you want and network with huge numbers of people in your chosen field is absolutely unprecedented.
Even developing countries now have access to internet. According to Pew Research, in 2013 only around 20% had access to internet, 2 years later that number rose to over 50% and continues to grow.
Digital technology has created extraordinary opportunities. The ease of online communication means that a conference call with a collaborator in Copenhagen is now easier than going next door for a cup of sugar.
This groundbreaking access gives us so many advantages. With it, you hold the power to:
- Learn nearly anything imaginable - From free YouTube videos teaching you how to change the oil in your car to online courses about astrophysics, you have access to more information that anyone in history.
- Connect with anyone - At this point, your network is only as small as you make it; never before has it been so easy to reach out to people.
- Share an idea, for free - In the past, when you wanted to get an idea out into the world, you only had a few options in traditional media. Now, you have nearly endless platforms.
I know, the internet has been around for a while, and none of this is new information for you, but sometimes I think we forget how much of an advantage we actually have right now. You truly hold the power to create the lifestyle you want.
No More Boring Desk Jobs!
Companies are looking less and less at what employees can bring to them and more and more at what technological advances can expand their profits. The focus for companies has always been on investment, but that investment used to mean investing in people, now it doesn’t.
If you’ve worked a salaried 9-5 job, you’ll understand how this translates into real life. If you’ve ever been in the position of hiring someone, you’ll also know how wasteful the entire process can be.
On the company's’ side, they spend enormous amounts of time and resources hiring and training a person and keeping them on staff and in the office. On the employee’s side, they spend incredible energy trying to find a job, only to discover how inefficient it can be sitting at a desk for 9-10 hours a day.
This is why companies are shifting their focus to outsourcing, hiring freelancers and letting employees work remotely. It’s the smartest move for everyone - employers save time and money and employees gain freedom and flexibility - win-win.
How to Take Advantage of The Transition
The melting together of today’s changing workplace and our need for independence has made NOW the perfect time to chart your own course.
And it means that we are no longer factory workers, but knowledge workers. So to be competitive, rather than buying more products, people are investing in themselves – they need to learn new skills, new ways of thinking — so they are looking for teachers and coaches.
That’s where you can thrive in this new world - by offering the services that people are desperately looking for. As people transition away from their jobs and start to venture out into the world of entrepreneurship, they need teachers and coaches to guide them.
What skills and services can you offer to these budding entrepreneurs? How can you make your mark in this new shift?
Of course, your skills and knowledge won’t be enough to bring you success, but they’re definitely the right foundation to build on. From that foundation, you’ll need to develop your skills and learn how to run a thriving business in an increasingly growing market.
All this access and technology is immensely positive, but it does mean more competition, so if you want to succeed, you’re going to have to master the marketing and sales skills necessary to stand out in the crowd.
The good news is, the days of sleazy sales are gone. People are craving trustworthy authorities on subjects and they need community and support to thrive. Selling your services today isn’t like the cold sales of yesterday. Now it’s all about connection and personality.
